Cleaning systems for MLT Cuccolini circular vibrating sieves: how to handle cohesive powders and prevent mesh clogging

In separation processes involving high cohesive powders —commonly referred to as “caking” powders— mesh clogging becomes a significant concern. These materials, often characterized by low flowability and a degree of hygroscopicity, tend to agglomerate when at rest, generating phenomena known as “caking” or “funneling” This results in the formation of lumps or compact masses that progressively hinder the material’s passage through the screening mesh.

To effectively address this issue, MLT Cuccolini’s vibrating sieves can be equipped with automatic cleaning systems tailored to the specific rheological properties of the powder being screened.

Under-Mesh systems: Spheres or Cylinders

Under-mesh cleaning systems with spheres or cylinders are among the most used solutions and require no modifications to the sieve body. These systems are installed by adding them inside a mesh ring that houses a perforated plate beneath the mesh, which supports the polymer spheres or cylinders.

The mechanical shaking and rubbing action from below the screening surface helps materials pass through more easily by keeping the mesh clear and maintaining a continuous material flow through the sieve.

 Over-mesh systems: Modular Triangle Solution

Another automatic cleaning method that requires no modifications to the vibrating sieve is the over-mesh triangle system. This modular solution is scalable based on the diameter of MLT Cuccolini’s sieve. It consists of an independent, removable triangular body that requires no fastening or permanent modifications to the machine.

Thanks to its versatility, this over-mesh triangle cleaning system can be adapted to all sizes and types of powder sieves. It does not interfere with the machine’s vibratory mechanics, making it a non-invasive and low-wear solution. Additional advantages include food-grade compatibility, easy cleaning, and proven performance in the food and nutraceutical sectors.

Criteria for choosing the right cleaning system

Selecting the most suitable cleaning system depends on the characteristics of the material to be screened. So, before taking a decision, it is important to ask some preliminary questions: Is the material a powder or a liquid? Is it free-flowing or prone to agglomeration? How does it respond to humidity?

On average, spheres are used for powders with low cohesive force (non-caking), as their bouncing action dislodges particles trapped in the mesh.

Cylinders —or cleaners— are typically used for liquids, as they tap and rub the mesh from underneath, resulting in very effective removal of fibrous materials.

The over-mesh triangle cleaning system is primarily used for materials with high cohesive force —caking materials— with or without the addition of under-mesh solutions. Its mechanical rubbing and bouncing action pushes the material across the screening surface, significantly reducing the risk of mesh clogging.

MLT’s approach

MLT Srl thoroughly analyzes material characteristics and production context to ensure optimal results in any application to determine the most effective cleaning solution. In some cases, a specific cleaning system may be used for applications beyond its conventional scope, delivering superior results through a carefully customized screening process.
